caringtotneslogo Encounters were commissioned to design a Creative Community Engagement tool on behalf of Caring Town Totnes Network. The purpose of the tool was to find out the caring and support needs of residents of all ages in Totnes.

Totnes Caring Town Network is a partnership of organisations and groups in and around Totnes who wanted to know how they could work together better to make Totnes feel like the most caring place it can be for all residents. It was set up in 2014 to explore how Totnes can face the major challenges of public spending cuts, withdrawal of non-statutory council services, and welfare changes that impact on local people. The network has been bringing together organisations involved in health, social care and welfare across the statutory, private and voluntary sectors to look at these challenges and start to provide some solutions to work on together.

This commission was part of the Locality Our Place programme designed to give people more power over local services and budgets in their neighbourhoods. Our Place supports communities and public service organisations to develop an operational plan and take control in their area to make sure that things work in the best way for local people.

Identifying the needs of the local community was the core part of our commission and Encounters Associate Jo Salter designed a 3D Totnes Map that was a playful and interactive way of consulting people. We took this creative tool out to local groups and street based locations across Totnes to ask people to take the Caring Town Totnes Tour. Members of the network also used the tool with the particular residents they engaged with spanning drop in visitors to the Library, the children’s centre, the memory cafe, the Doctors Surgery, the local churches, the homeless shelter and the youth club.

Encounters associates Ruth Ben-Tovim and Jade Cambell worked with local health researcher Sarah Robens to deliver this project on behalf of Encounters.

ctt1Alongside the outreach engagement Encounters had been working with the network to set up a pilot information and activities ‘Caring Town Hub’ in the Mansion, a large community building in the centre of Totnes. As the maps were filled in they were brought back to the hub and became part of an evolving exhibition, covering the walls of the space.
