TIMELINES
Encounters
were commissioned to work for eight months on this three year project
, which aimed to engage the public in arts activities and introduce artworks alongside Ripley Greenway, the multi-user route that follows the path of the old Ripley Railway. The project was
coordinated by Amber Borough Council and Groundwork Erewash Valley.
Encounters maintained a presence both along the Ripley Greenway as well as in
the town centre, so that we could meet and engage a wide range of people. Spreading the project over eight months allowed us to capture, document and respond to the area through seasonal changes, and
to explore people's views, opinions and thoughts about the Ripley Greenway route at different times of the year. We visited Ripley once and month taking over market stalls, as well as setting up activity points at different sites along the route.
Below are several examples of how we stimulated dialogue, and collected and presented people's thoughts and memories.
ENCOUNTERS CHRISTMAS STALL
We set up a stall on the market over Christmas and asked visitors to tell us what present they would give to Ripley if they were Father Christmas. This activity enabled people to share what they felt was wrong with or missing in Ripley. We
also asked passers-by to write about a particular memorable present they had received. Gift tags were provided for people to write on and each tag was then hung on the stall Christmas tree.
Encounters laid a trail of toy plastic wild animals around the square for people to find and return to the stall. We asked finders to hang these on the Christmas tree, and in return they received a chocolate decoration as a thank you gift. Throughout the day the tree became full of animal decorations as people of all ages and backgrounds found and returned the toy animals.
A PRESENT FOR RIPLEY
As a way of sharing the stories about memorable presents that were collected on the Christmas stall, Encounters created 30 perspex presents and placed them around the town. Each box contained objects and decorative material, along with a gift tag with text about memorable presents. These boxes were hung from trees and posts, and created a trail from the town to and along the Greenway.

Leave a chalk story along the route
-
Answer selected questions and chalk the answers along the route
-
Decorate the pathway
-
Collect objects along the way
-
